UPDATE: Sept 12, 2017
We want to wish a BIG congratulations to the winners of the Judge's Selection and People's Choice contests! We will be contacting you shortly to set up your koi shipping and prizes.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Grow-out contests and voted on Facebook. We hope you had fun selecting your favorite koi and watching them develop.
As a refresher, in this event, people bought Dainichi Showa (with free shipping included). Then their koi were grown at Kodama Koi Farm in Oahu for the summer, harvested in August 2017, and entered into 2 contests for great prizes (details below).
Back in April 2017, these koi ranged in size from about 9–13in (22–32cm); and now at the beginning of September 2017, they range from around 15–18in (37–46cm). Bold sumi (black) patterns have developed beautifully on many of these Showa. Check out the photos below to see how their patterns and sizes changed!
Congratulations to the winners of the Judge's Selection contest!
Contest rules from April 2017 for: Judge's Selection and People's Choice
After a contestant chooses koi with the most champion-potential, Kodama Koi Farm will grow them out for him or her. Then at the end of August 2017, the koi automatically enter 2 contests—the Judge's Selection contest and the People's Choice contest.
Judge's Selection contest
The judge Mamoru Kodama (founder of Kodama Koi Farm) will select his top 3 Showa; and their owners win these Kodama gift certificates as grand prizes:
- 1st place gets $1,000 certificate
- 2nd place gets $500 certificate
- 3rd place gets $300 certificate
People's Choice contest
Facebook voters get to be judges and vote for their favorite koi on a special Facebook post. The 3 koi with the most votes get these Kodama All-Season koi food prizes:
- 1st place gets 10lb koi food
- 2nd place gets 5lb koi food
- 3rd place gets 2.5lb koi food
- The koi's sex is unknown at the moment
- If your koi is not harvested alive, you will receive a replacement at Kodama Koi Farm's discretion
- At the grow-out's end, if you do not like the koi you picked for any reason, Kodama Koi Farm will buy it back from you with a $100 gift certificate
UPDATE: July 3, 2017
This is a late update, but watch Taro's video update from June 7, 2017. The koi are growing bigger and are from 12in to more than 16in long at the time of the video. Also a lot of their sumi has darkened into a rich lacquer black. Beautiful!
UPDATE: May 17, 2017
Here are 2 new updates for the grow-out. First, the koi are growing nicely and are now 12–15 inches long (back in April they were 9–13in). Check out the video below:
Second, 21 new Showa are added and available for purchase. They have ID's ending from *004–*033. See them all below!
